On April 2016, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley (BGCHV) announced the completion of a new school age center on the campus of Golden West College in Huntington Beach. This center is the first Boys & Girls Club on a college campus in California. The Pacific Life Foundation supported this initiative with a $1 million capital grant that was presented to the BGCHV at the Foundation’s annual grants reception on January 21, 2016.
The BGCHV has named the new center in recognition of the Pacific Life Foundation. The 14,800-square-foot center serves up to 2,500 youth per year, primarily from the Ocean View School District. Bus service brings children to the Club from throughout the community and more than 70% of the children come from low-income households. The center includes computers, study rooms, play areas and a teen room, among other amenities.
The grand opening was commemorated with a formal ribbon-cutting today and included representatives from BGCHV and Pacific Life Foundation. "The Pacific Life Foundation is proud of its long partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Huntington Valley," said Tennyson Oyler, president of the Pacific Life Foundation. "The new School Age Center will be a place for children to learn, grow and excel for generations to come."
Next to the center is a new playground that was built in partnership with the Pacific Life Foundation and the nonprofit KaBOOM! in 2015. The BGCHV’s Golden West College site also includes a preschool completed in 2011 and new gymnasium, which along with the school age center completes a "Family Campus" complex on the college campus.
