Raschelle Drumheller's journey at Pacific Life, from customer service to a successful sales career, highlights her passion for people and her dedication to mentoring and recruiting early career talent.
I started at Pacific Life about 13 years ago in customer service. Interestingly, I didn't have a background in finance—I graduated with a bachelor's in behavioral science. I loved working with people and the idea of making a difference. I found myself at Pacific Life because I applied for a customer service role. Although I enjoyed my time in customer service, I was drawn to working with financial advisors and building relationships. This led me to transition into sales.
My days are quite varied. I juggle family responsibilities with my professional role. I have two daughters, and they are a big motivation for me. At work, I manage interns, recruit, hire, and train new talent. Each day is different, which keeps me energized and engaged.
Initially, it was a colleague who inspired me. She mentioned the excitement and opportunities in sales, and I decided to join her. I was fortunate to have mentors and managers who saw potential in me and encouraged my growth. I loved the fast-paced environment and the satisfaction of helping clients build their retirement plans.
When I transitioned to sales, I was the youngest and the only female among a team of eight wholesalers. It was challenging, but I had great mentors who supported me. Over time, I earned awards like MVP and Rising Star, which boosted my confidence. I believe in the importance of mentorship and have been passionate about recruiting more women into our sales organization.
I've been involved in women's recruiting efforts, including an annual Women in Sales recruiting event. This event has doubled our female applicants in the past two years. We're also retaining more women in our internship program. Additionally, I've connected with diverse communities on campuses to educate them about opportunities in financial services.
I emphasize the importance of building relationships and enjoying a fast-paced environment. I also highlight the upcoming opportunities due to the "silver tsunami"—many people are retiring, creating a demand for financial services professionals. I share my own story of not having a finance background to show that it's possible to succeed with dedication and the right support.
Omaha has a lot to offer, including a fantastic zoo and outdoor activities. We live on an acreage outside the city, which allows us to enjoy off-roading and spending time with our community. It's a great place to raise a family and balance work and personal life.
