The Pacific Life Foundation has been a strong supporter of Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County since its inception in 2001. Their mission is to serve the most vulnerable and underserved children (0-17) by providing no or low-cost prevention dental services (screenings, fluoride varnish, sealants), restorations (fillings, pediatric oral care), and education and referral/counseling for specialty services. In addition, Healthy Smiles is one of the only community clinics in the County to provide full sedation services, including general anesthesia for children who present extensive decay, or who have special healthcare needs.
In 2011, Healthy Smiles touched the lives of nearly 30,000 children. One out of three children screened in Orange County schools showed visible and extensive signs of decay.
In 2007, the Pacific Life Foundation provided funding to purchase their first and only Smile Mobile, a mobile two-chair dental clinic within a custom RV. The Smile Mobile has had tremendous success, reaching over 7,500 low-income children annually in mostly Title 1 schools in Central and North Orange County. The mobile clinic allows a team of dentists and support staff to transcend transportation barriers that limit low-income families' access to regular dental care. Through the Smile Mobile, children receive access to screenings from Pediatric and General Dentists, fluoride varnish, sealants, restorations, and referrals to safety-net 'dental homes,' where they can access permanent care.
In December 2012, the Pacific Life Foundation provided a $400,000 grant to purchase a second Smile Mobile. This additional clinic will extend the organization's reach into South Orange County and bring oral health services to low-income children in their schools, at health fairs, and at outreach events.
